Bangladeshi Journalists in International Media condemn arrest of journalist in Satkhira

Bangladeshi Journalists in International Media-BJIM strongly condemns the arrest of journalist Tipu Sultan in Satkhira for investigating alleged government corruption.
"Sultan was allegedly assaulted by a government engineer while inspecting a construction site. When he approached the Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) in Tala upazila, the UNO reportedly acted with bias, sentencing Sultan to 10 days in jail," reads a statement issued by BJIM today (24 April).
The statement reads, "If the content of the reporting is deemed incorrect, a rejoinder should be issued. Assaulting an on-duty journalist and jailing him without a thorough investigation is a clear violation of press freedom and an unjust abuse of administrative power."
BJIM demanded Sultan's immediate release, a thorough investigation into the actions of the UNO and the engineer, and exemplary justice.
Tipu Sultan is the Satkhira correspondent of a national daily.
On Tuesday (22 April) he was sentenced to 10-day in jail over an altercation and scuffle with a sub-district (upazila) council official over a request for information regarding the construction work of Tala Upazila Parishad Complex in Satkhira.
