Bangladesh sees remittance surge to $2.71bn in January
On January 26 alone, expatriate Bangladeshis sent home $88 million
Remittance inflows to Bangladesh surged in January, reaching $2.71 billion in the first 26 days of the month, according to data from Bangladesh Bank.
Central bank spokesperson Arif Hossain Khan said the country received an average of $104.2 million per day during this period, marking a sharp increase compared to the same period last year, when remittances stood at $1.79 billion.
On January 26 alone, expatriate Bangladeshis sent home $88 million, he added. During the current fiscal year 2025–26 (July 2025 to January 26, 2026), total remittances amounted to $18.97 billion, representing a 21.9% year-on-year growth.
The January inflow follows a record-breaking December 2025, when remittances reached $3.23 billion—the highest monthly inflow of the current fiscal year and the second-highest monthly remittance in the country's history.
Monthly remittance inflows in FY 2025–26 so far are as follows:
- December: $3.23 billion
- November: $2.89 billion
- October: $2.56 billion
- September: $2.69 billion
- August: $2.42 billion
- July: $2.47 billion
The strong performance continues the momentum from FY 2024–25, when Bangladesh recorded an all-time high of $30.32 billion in remittance inflows.
Economists say the sustained rise in remittances through formal channels is providing a crucial boost to foreign exchange reserves and supporting overall macroeconomic stability
