Bangladesh has called for Qatar's robust cooperation in ensuring the repatriation of Rohingyas to Myanmar.

Khalilur Rahman, the high representative of the chief adviser for Rohingya and priority affairs, made the appeal during a meeting with Qatar's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Dr Mohammed bin Abdulaziz bin Saleh Al Khulaifi, in Doha yesterday evening (9 December).

During the meeting, Khalil presented the challenges raised by the prolonged presence of approximately 12 lakh Rohingyas in Bangladesh since 2007. He noted that their stay has created significant social, economic, and environmental pressures and concerns about national security.

"Resolving the Rohingya crisis requires the attention and concerted efforts of the global community," Dr Khalil said.

He also briefed Dr Khulaifi about the UN General Assembly's decision to convene an international conference on the Rohingya issue next year in response to Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus's appeal.

In response, Dr Khulaifi assured broad cooperation from Qatar. He reiterated Qatar's commitment to addressing the plight of Rohingyas, emphasising the nation's focus on their humanitarian needs and shared faith.

The meeting also touched upon Bangladesh's current political situation. Dr Khalil described the situation as stable, a sentiment echoed by Qatar's minister, who reaffirmed his country's strong support for Bangladesh's interim government.

Bangladesh Ambassador to Qatar Md Nazrul Islam and Deputy Chief of Mission Md Waliur Rahman were also present at the meeting.
