Bangladesh requires $116.8b to cut 84.92m tonnes of CO2 emissions

Bangladesh will need $116.8 billion to implement its NDC 3.0 (Third Nationally Determined Contribution) plan to reduce climate risks, Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan said today (21 September).
Speaking at a workshop in Dhaka, the adviser noted that NDC 3.0 is not only a plan for emission reduction but also a pledge for an inclusive and just future.
The "Validation Workshop on the NDC 3.0 (Third Nationally Determined Contribution)" was held at the Department of Environment in Agargaon, says a press release from the ministry.
According to the press release, of the total amount, $25.95 billion is estimated for unconditional investment and $90.23 billion for conditional investment. The plan targets reducing 84.92 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent emissions by 2035, including 26.7 million tonnes (6.39%) unconditionally and 58.2 million tonnes (13.91%) conditionally.
At the event, Rizwana Hasan called for rights-based climate actions ensuring participation of women, children, the elderly, persons with disabilities, ethnic minorities, and climate migrants.
She stressed youth engagement, climate-resilient sectors, and the integration of climate education and green skills into the national curriculum.
She also underlined the need for a "just transition" in renewable energy by retraining workers, supporting small entrepreneurs, and involving vulnerable communities.
The workshop was also addressed by Environment Secretary Dr Farhina Ahmed and Additional Secretary (Climate Change) Mohammad Navid Shafiullah. It was chaired by Department of Environment Director General Dr Md Kamruzzaman and conducted by Joint Secretary (Climate Change) Dharitri Kumar Sarkar, with representatives from national and international organisations joining the discussion.
