The Internal Resources Division (IRD) has suspended Assistant Tax Commissioner Jannatul Ferdous for allegedly taking a bribe of Tk38 lakh in exchange for handing over sensitive income tax records.
According to an IRD order issued yesterday (1 September), Jannatul Ferdous, posted at Tax Zone-5 in Dhaka, was found to have received the money from taxpayer Salah Uddin Ahmed's nominated representative — a tax lawyer — to release a significant portion of the taxpayer's previous income tax documents.
The order, signed by IRD Secretary and National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman Abdur Rahman Khan, states that departmental proceedings have been initiated against her.
In line with Rule no 12 of the Government Servants (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 2018, Jannatul Ferdous has been made an officer on special duty (OSD) at the NBR during her suspension period and will be entitled to subsistence allowance as per the rules, UNB reported.
