Assailants open fire at businessman's house in Ctg over refusal to pay extortion

Armed assailants allegedly opened fire at a businessman's house for refusing to pay extortion money in Chattogram's Hathazari upazila this morning (20 August).
The incident took place around 10:30am at Amanbazar, spreading panic across the area.
Police said the businessman had been receiving threats over the phone in recent days, with criminals demanding Tk50 lakh. When he refused, four masked youths armed with firearms stormed his residence.
CCTV footage reviewed by police shows all four carrying guns, with at least two repeatedly firing inside the premises. The sound of gunshots sent neighbours into hiding, while family members fled the house in fear.
Hathazari Police Station Officer-in-Charge said, "We have confirmed the extortion demand. Legal action is being taken over the shooting incident."
No injuries were reported, but the attack has heightened insecurity among local traders, who allege growing threats of extortion in the area.
