ASK urges govt to meet protesting MPO teachers' demands, end ongoing crisis
The Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) has expressed deep concern over the recent incidents surrounding the ongoing protest by MPO-listed teachers, urging the government to accept their demands and resolve the crisis through a dialogue.
The teachers, who have been demonstrating in the capital since 13 October, are demanding a 20% house rent allowance, a Tk1,500 medical allowance, and a 75% festival bonus.
They also declared an indefinite work abstention across the country after police action on teachers during a rally in front of the National Press Club on 12 October, leaving several injured.
In a statement today (15 October), terming the police action against the teachers as "unfortunate and unacceptable," the ASK said such behaviour toward teachers, who play a vital role in the nation's development, is deeply regrettable.
The rights group mentioned that the teachers' demands go beyond financial or professional rights. "They are closely linked to ensuring a dignified work environment, educational quality, and social recognition for educators."
The ASK called on the government to hold constructive talks with teacher representatives and take effective steps to end the deadlock in the education sector.
The organisation also urged authorities to investigate the police action incident and ensure accountability for those responsible.
The ASK emphasised that "only through dialogue and mutual respect" can the current crisis be resolved and stability restored.
