ASK condemns attack on Baul artistes’ human chain in Manikganj, calls it a violation of constitutional rights
Safeguarding artists and cultural workers is a duty of the State, said ASK
The Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) has expressed deep concern and strong condemnation today (24 November) after a group identifying itself as "Touhidi Janata" attacked, assaulted, and intimidated participants at a peaceful human chain in Manikganj yesterday (23 November), injuring at least three artists.
The demonstration had been organized by fans and admirers of Baul artist Abul Sarkar following his arrest. ASK said that any attack on peaceful expression or public assembly is wholly unacceptable and represents a clear violation of constitutionally guaranteed civic rights.
Articles 37 and 39 of the Constitution of Bangladesh guarantee freedom of expression, the right to peaceful assembly and the freedom to practise cultural traditions.
Protecting all cultural and spiritual traditions, including the Baul heritage, is a constitutional responsibility of the State, the organisation noted. Attempts to obstruct or attack artistic or cultural expression on ideological or social grounds were described as contrary to the law and to fundamental human rights.
The rights body observed that threats and attacks against Baul artistes and cultural activists have become increasingly frequent in recent months. It warned that ineffective or delayed legal action in such cases has emboldened groups opposed to artistic and cultural practices, leading to repeated assaults.
This trend, ASK cautioned, poses a serious threat to the rule of law, human rights protection, and cultural freedom. ASK called for a prompt, impartial investigation into the Manikganj attack and for legal action against those responsible. It also insisted that the detained Baul artist must be ensured due process, justice, and the protection of his right to freedom of expression.
Safeguarding artists and cultural workers is a duty of the State, ASK said, warning that failure to do so risks fuelling further conflict, violence, and social intolerance. On 20 November, Abul Sarkar, president of the Bangladesh Baul Samity, was arrested in Madaripur in a case filed against him on allegations of hurting religious sentiments.
