Apollo Imperial Hospital in Chattogram has successfully performed the city's first-ever conjoined twin separation surgery, marking another significant milestone in Bangladesh's pediatric surgical history.

The twin boys, Riaasat Zafar Chowdhury and Rhenish Zafar Chowdhury, were born on 6 May to a family from Khulshi, Chattogram. Led by renowned pediatric surgeon Dr Adnan Walid, the three-hour surgery involved a team of 18 medical professionals, including eight specialist doctors.

Weighing just 973 grams and 1,045 grams at birth, the twins were in critical condition and required immediate intervention. Within just 23 hours of their delivery, a highly specialised team at Apollo undertook the complex surgical separation, making it one of the fastest conjoined twin separation surgeries ever performed worldwide, according to the hospital.

Since the procedure, the twins have shown encouraging signs of recovery, now weighing 1,255 grams and 1,350 grams respectively.

The high-risk delivery was managed by gynaecologist Dr Reshma Sharmin, while the anaesthesia team, led by Dr Maswood, ensured the stability of the premature babies throughout the delicate procedure.

At a press conference held yesterday, the hospital's senior leadership shared details of this achievement.

Apollo Imperial Hospitals Chairman Wahed Malek, Managing Director Nafid Nabi, CEO Helal Uddin, Deputy Chief of Medical Services Dr Fazl-e-Akbar, and Consultant Anesthesiologist Dr Masud were present at the press conference.

The parents of the twin boys were also present at the conference and expressed deep gratitude to the hospital's medical team while speaking to reporters about the procedure.

Speaking at the event, Wahed Malek said, "This remarkable feat is not only a testament to our medical excellence but also reflects our unwavering commitment to advancing healthcare in Chattogram and across the country."

The successful surgery marks Bangladesh's sixth conjoined twin separation and the first ever conducted in Chattogram.
