Animal abuse: Hanumans stage protest at Jashore police station

A group of hanumans on Sunday staged demonstration at Jashore's Keshabpur police station compound in protest of the alleged beating of a baby primate.

According to locals, at least 25 black-faced hanumans took position in front of the police station's main entrance, then at one point entered the duty officer's room.

Officer-in-Charge of Keshabpur police station MD Shahin said, "I have understood the situation when I saw two female hanumans sitting beside the wall with the injured baby."

I have assured them of a fair inquiry into the matter and gave them some foods. The protesters went away after staying there for around an hour, said Shahin.

He further said that this is for the second time during his tenure at this station that hanumans, in groups, entered the police premises. "They came to our station three months ago as they were facing food crisis," he said.

Keshabpur upazila Forest Officer Abdul Monayem Hossain said there are at least 500 primates in the upazila and adjacent areas.

They are served with two kilograms of nuts, two kilograms of bread and 35 kilograms of bananas every day, which are not enough for them, he added.

Hanumans often enter people's houses and offices in search of food.
