A Feni court has granted probation to a man accused in an animal cruelty case on the condition that he will feed and care for 15 dogs for three months.

The court has also instructed the local upazila livestock officer to submit a report on the matter to the court in due course. Any violation of the conditions may result in further punishment under the same law.

On Thursday (26 December), Judge Aparajita Das of Feni's Senior Judicial Magistrate Court 2 passed the order, confirmed the plaintiff's lawyer Shafiqul Islam Piyas.

He said, "This is the first case of animal cruelty in Feni. Since accused Jasim Uddin pleaded guilty, the court placed him on three months' probation. During this period, he must feed and care for 15 dogs."

Earlier, on 9 July the court accepted an investigation report regarding the incident of dog beating and ordered Jasim to appear in court.

On 1 April, Enam Hossain, director of Animal Aid Feni, filed the case against three individuals in Feni's Senior Judicial Magistrate Court.

Subsequently, Judge Muhammad Ashequr Rahman took the case into cognisance and instructed the Sadar upazila livestock officer to submit an investigation report.

According to Enam Hossain, the plaintiff, "On 4 February, Jasim Uddin, son of Kalam Mia of Shanti Company Bari on Shanti Company Road in Feni town, brutally beat two mother dogs and nine puppies to death without reason. The accused violated the Animal Welfare Act by killing 11 dogs in public without permission."

"I sought legal action to put an end to such unjust acts of animal cruelty," he added.
