Advisory Council holds meeting to finalise July Charter implementation method
The meeting will primarily focus on the current political situation, particularly on resolving the differences between the BNP and Jamaat regarding the implementation of the July Charter.
The Advisory Council of the interim government has held a meeting, with Chief Adviser (CA) Muhammad Yunus in the chair, to finalise the method for implementing the July National Charter and decide on other important matters.
The meeting started at 11:15am today at the CA's Office (CAO) in the capital. Following the meeting, CA Yunus is scheduled to address the nation around 2:30pm.
According to Cabinet Division sources, the main agenda of today's meeting was "Implementation of the July National Charter 2025."
Sources at the CAO said the meeting will primarily focus on the current political situation, particularly on resolving the differences between the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami regarding the implementation of the July Charter.
The advisers are expected to discuss strategies to bring all political parties on board, ensuring the national election is held within the government's stipulated timeframe.
The council will also discuss how to respond to the recent reactivation of the banned Awami League.
The BNP had earlier submitted notes of dissent on several points of the July Charter, opposing recommendations for implementation. The party also demands that the general election and referendum be held on the same day and rejects forming an upper house under the proportional representation (PR) system.
Jamaat, on the other hand, supports forming an upper house under the PR system and wants the referendum to be held before the national election.
After the last Advisory Council meeting on 3 November, the government had given the political parties seven days to reach a consensus on the issue. However, as the parties failed to do so, Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam has said the government would now take the decision on its own.
A final decision on the issue is expected at today's meeting, with the government aiming to reach a consensus by accommodating all sides' concerns.
Other agenda items at the meeting include approval of proposals to establish new embassies in Dublin, Ireland, and Buenos Aires, Argentina; reports on Bangladesh's participation in several recent international events — including the 6th Islamic Conference of Labour Ministers in Qatar, the 80th UN General Assembly session in New York, and the Second Global Summit of the School Meals Coalition in Brazil.
There are also some miscellaneous items on the agenda.
