Police have arrested an accused in a case filed over the murder of Jahidul Islam Parvez, a student of Primeasia University in the capital's Banani area.
Md Hridoy Miyaji (23) was arrested around 2:30am today (22 April) from Monairkandi village in Muradnagar Upazila, Cumilla.
Titas Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Shahid Ullah confirmed the arrest this evening.
He said following the arrest, Hridoy was handed over to RAB-11's CPC-2 Cumilla unit early Tuesday.
He is listed as the fifth accused in the murder case, said the official.
According to police, the raid was carried out at the residence of Harun-ur-Rashid in Monairkandi, Balrampur Union, with the assistance of RAB-11. Hridoy, a resident of Durlabdi village, had been hiding at his uncle's home following the incident.
How the incident unfolded
The deceased, Parvez, was a student of the private university's Textile Engineering Department and hailed from Mymensingh.
The case statement claims that accused Sobhan Niyaz Tushar and Hridoy Miyaji are leaders of the Students Against Discrimination (SAD) in Banani.
It said that around 3pm Saturday (19 April), Parvez was chatting and laughing with his friends in front of a shop, locally known as "Alaminer Dokan", in front of the Rancon Building on the opposite side of the university.
Two female students from the University of Scholars were standing behind them. At that time, Meheraj Islam, Abu Jafar Giffari, and Md Mahathir Hasan approached Parvez and asked why they were laughing.
This led to an argument between Parvez and his friends and the accused named in the case. Three university teachers later intervened and resolved the dispute.
Around 4:40pm, when Parvez and his friends were talking on the road in front of the university, the accused, along with other unidentified individuals, chased them, according to the case statement.
It said that as Parvez and his friends were running into Primeasia University, Meheraj, Abu Jafar, Mahathir, and Rifat caught Parvez and his friend Tarikul Islam at the university gate.
The accused, along with unidentified accomplices, assaulted both of them brutally. Jafar and Mahathir held Parvez firmly, as Meheraj allegedly used a sharp weapon to confirm his death, reads the case document.
The CCTV camera footage of the incident has also shown similar events occurring. The Business Standard, however, could not independently confirm the identities of the attackers.
They also attacked Tarikul with sharp weapons with the intent to kill him, causing serious injuries to his head and below his left elbow.
