ACC sues Ziaul Ahsan, wife for acquiring Tk40.87cr illegal assets
The anti-graft body also uncovers unusual transactions totaling Tk342 crore in their bank accounts
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed two separate cases against Ziaul Ahsan, former director-general of the National Telecommunications Monitoring Centre (NTMC), and his wife for acquiring illegal assets worth Tk40.87 crore and engaging in unusual transactions totaling Tk342 crore.
ACC Director General (Prevention), Akhter Hossain, confirmed the filing of the cases at a press briefing at the agency's headquarters in Segunbagicha today (23 January).
He said investigations revealed that Ziaul Ahsan amassed illegal assets worth Tk22.27 crore in his name. Furthermore, authorities discovered unusual transactions amounting to Tk122 crore in eight of his bank accounts.

At the same time, the ACC found that Ziaul Ahsan's wife, Nusrat Jahan, had acquired illegal assets worth Tk18.59 crore. The ACC investigations also uncovered unusual transactions totaling Tk222.5 crore in four of her bank accounts.

However, the ACC official did not disclose the specific timeframe of these unusual transactions.
Sacked army official Ziaul, who was arrested in mid-August, is facing charges of crimes against humanity committed during the anti-discrimination movement led by students and the mass uprising in July and August.
Ziaul, who was a two-star ranked Bangladesh Army officer, was relieved from service by the army on 6 August, a day after the Awami League government was ousted in a mass uprising.
Until then, he had been serving as the chief of National Telecommunication Monitoring Center since 2022. Prior to that, he served in the Rapid Action Battalion.
Ziaul had taken the army's refuge fearing a threat to his personal security. The army handed him over to the police on 15 August night. Police later showed him arrested in a case filed at New Market Police Station over the killing of Shahjahan Ali during the quota reform protests on 16 July.
On 16 October, he was also shown arrested in another case filed with New Market police station over plotting to abduct and murder Col (retd) Md Tauhidul Islam Chowdhury in December 2018.
