ACC to sue former Gazipur mayor Zahangir over Tk7,500cr embezzlement
Another key accused in the case is Golam Kibria, the former chief accounts officer of the Gazipur City Corporation.

The Anti-Corruption Commission is preparing to file a corruption case against former Gazipur City mayor Zahangir Alam, accusing him of embezzling and laundering Tk7,500 crore from the city corporation's funds.
ACC Director General (Prevention) Akhtar Hossain confirmed the development to reporters today (3 August). The case, which will be filed by ACC Assistant Director Ashiqur Rahman, has already received formal approval from the commission's internal review meeting.
Another key accused in the case is Golam Kibria, the former chief accounts officer of the Gazipur City Corporation.
According to the ACC's investigation, the accused manipulated public procurement by generating fake tenders and bills, awarding contracts to their own affiliated firms. Through this, massive amounts were siphoned off from both the development and revenue funds of the city corporation. The money was then allegedly laundered abroad.
The ACC has stated that Zahangir Alam and Golam Kibria were directly involved in the corruption scheme and used their official positions to orchestrate and benefit from the embezzlement.
Earlier in 2022, the ACC launched an inquiry against Zahangir over embezzlement and unusual bank transactions.
Zahangir, the then Gazipur city unit general secretary Alam, was expelled from the party by then ruling Awami League for life on allegations of making derogatory comments about Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and martyred freedom fighters.
On 26 November 2021, he was fired from the post of mayor.
