'AC blast, not bomb attack on BCS Admin Welfare Assoc': BNP regrets 'incorrect statement'

The BNP has issued an apology for an earlier statement, made by the party's Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul condemning the death of a man in an alleged bomb attack on the BCS Administration Welfare Association office at New Eskaton, stating that it was based on "incorrect information".
In a post on its official Facebook page today (1 March), the BNP wrote, "Apology for incorrect statement…The statement made by Mirza Fakhrul to the media today, mentioning that one person was killed and another seriously injured in a bomb attack at the BCS Administration Welfare Association building, is based on incorrect information."
"In fact, no bomb attack was carried out there," the BNP said, clarifying that the casualty resulted from an AC explosion.
"The BNP expresses its regret for unintentionally giving an incorrect statement," reads the statement, signed by Taiful Islam Tipu, BNP's associate office secretary.
The incident occurred early on Friday morning when an office assistant at the public administration ministry was killed, and another was injured, in an air conditioner explosion at the Bangladesh Institute of Administration and Management (BIAM) Foundation building in Dhaka's Eskaton.
Fakhrul had earlier stated that he condemned the "bomb attack" where "one person was killed and another gravely injured on Thursday".
Labelling it a "cowardly and heinous" act, Fakhrul warned of a crumbling law-and-order situation in Bangladesh.
"I strongly condemn and protest this bomb attack. It's a stark sign of how far law and order has deteriorated," he stated.
He accused criminals of exploiting the post-Awami League power vacuum, following its ouster, to create chaos.
"These attacks and deaths reflect their anarchy. We must crush them with an iron fist," he said.
Fakhrul demanded the swift arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators, calling for unity across all professions and political lines to safeguard lives, property, and democratic rights, including the vote. He also extended deep condolences to the victims' families, mourning their loss amid the violence.
