8 workers burnt in explosion at Sitakunda shipbreaking yard in Ctg
At least eight workers suffered burn injuries in an oil tank explosion at a shipbreaking yard in Sitakunda, Chattogram today (16 September).
The incident occurred around 1pm at Jiri Subedar Shipbreaking Yard in the upazila's Sonaichhari area.
The injured are Md Dulal Hossain, Hafizur Rahman, Md Anwar Hossain, Moktar Sheikh, Shahidur Rahman, Md Faruk, Md Dulal Hossain, and Hanif Ali.
Confirming the matter, Chattogram Industrial Police SP Abdullah Al Mahmud said the injured have been rescued and admitted to two private hospitals in Dhaka in critical condition.
SP Mahmud said, "While cutting the ship, sparks fell on the oil tank, triggering an explosion and a fire. Two workers present there sustained serious burns and six others nearby were injured. The injured were rescued and taken to two private hospitals in the city."
He added that two workers suffered 25-30% burns.
