7 detained after 'Joy Bangla' slogans at Tofail Ahmed's janaza in Dhanmondi
An incident involving "Joy Bangla" slogans and a brief procession took place after the janaza of veteran politician Tofail Ahmed in Dhaka's Dhanmondi area this evening, leading to the detention of seven people by law enforcement.
The first janaza for Tofail Ahmed was held at Takwa Mosque in Dhanmondi around 5:30pm. Following the prayer, attendees reportedly raised slogans including "Joy Bangla" and other expressions in support of the Awami League. At one stage, they attempted to bring out a procession.
Police intervened and detained seven individuals from the spot to prevent further escalation, said officials.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) NM Nasiruddin said some people were attempting to create an unstable situation by chanting slogans after the janaza.
He added that the detainees are being verified for their identities and political affiliations, and legal action is underway.
Earlier in the afternoon, Tofail Ahmed passed away at around 3:30pm while undergoing treatment at Square Hospital in Dhaka.
