First funeral prayer of Tofail Ahmed held in Dhaka
The next funeral prayer for the veteran politician will be held tomorrow (2 June) at his village home in Bhola.
The first funeral prayer of veteran Awami League leader Tofail Ahmed, was held at Masjid-ut-Taqwa in the capital's Dhanmondi area.
Family members and well-wishers attended the funeral prayer after Maghrib prayers today (1 June).
Former minister Tofail Ahmed, who played a key role in the 1969 Mass Uprising and the Liberation War, died at around 3:30pm today while undergoing treatment at Square Hospital in Dhaka.
The next funeral prayer for the veteran politician will be held tomorrow (2 June) at his village home in Bhola.
Tofail Ahmed's younger brother, Dr Belayet Hossain Molla, said the body would be kept at the morgue of Square Hospital after the funeral prayer.
He said the body would be taken to Bhola tomorrow morning, where three funeral prayers would be held before he is buried beside the graves of his parents.
Speaking at the funeral prayer, former general secretary of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) Ruhin Hossain Prince said the contributions of Tofail Ahmed to politics, the Liberation War and the country's independence would always be remembered.
"His courageous role will continue to inspire us. I pray for the peace of his soul. As long as Bangladesh exists, Tofail Ahmed will live on in the hearts and minds of the people," he said.
He further said Tofail Ahmed's death was an irreparable loss.
"He was alive, though ill, and that itself gave us encouragement. Our leader was still among us. He is no longer here, but may his inspiration, greatness, sacrifice and courage continue to guide the nation forward," Prince added.
