6 fishermen missing after trawler sinks in Bay off Patuakhali
Five others survived by clinging to parts of the capsized trawler and a buoy for nearly six hours before being rescued.
Six fishermen have remained missing since Sunday (5 July) after a fishing trawler carrying 11 people capsized in the Bay of Bengal off the coast of Patuakhali's Rangabali upazila.
The missing fishermen are Imadul Kha, 45, of Tularam village; Harun, 60, of Kharida village under Panpatti Union; Forkan, 45, Sayed, 20, and Al-Amin, 40, of Adani village under Gajalia Union; and Akkas, 25, of Pakshia village in Golachipa Sadar Union.
The five survivors said the trawler, owned by Imadul Sikder of Kharida village, overturned around 60 kilometres south of the Moudubi area while they were fishing in deep waters on the night of 5 July. Strong currents are believed to have caused the accident.
The survivors stayed afloat for nearly six hours by clinging to parts of the capsized trawler and a buoy before they were rescued.
They later received primary treatment at the Rangabali Upazila Health Complex.
Search operations are continuing to locate the six missing fishermen.
Jashim Uddin, officer-in-charge of Rangabali Police Station, said police were aware of the incident, but the area where the trawler sank falls under the jurisdiction of Golachipa Police Station.
