585 Bangladeshis return through Akhaura land port
The usual passenger service has been suspended since the government closed the border with India for 14 days with effect from 26 April. Later the suspension order was extended by another 14 days
As many as 585 Bangladeshis have entered the country through the Akhaura International Immigration Checkpost in Brahmanbaria till Saturday (15 May) from 26 April.
Besides, fifteen Indian nationals working at the Indian High Commission in Dhaka have also entered the country through the port.
Abdul Hamid, in charge of the police at Akhaura International Immigration Checkpost, said that passengers stranded in India and Bangladesh were able to return home through this check-post only by presenting a no-objection letter, issued by their respective high commissions, to the port authority.

According to the check-post sources, a total of 600 people entered Bangladesh through the Akhaura check-post between the periods of 26 April to 15 May.
On 15 May, twelve people crossed the border, of whom three were sent to the capital's Combined Military Hospital (CMH) hospital and others were placed at different government quarantine facilities in Brahmanbaria.
