Bangladesh-India freight train services continue, passenger trains remain suspended: Minister
An average of 43 freight trains enter Bangladesh from India each month, while around 42 empty rakes are sent back.
Passenger train services between Bangladesh and India are currently suspended, but freight trains continue to operate, Railways Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam said in parliament today (9 September).
The government is taking initiatives to resume passenger train services between the two countries, he said during the question-answer session in parliament, chaired by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad.
Responding to a question from Kushtia-1 MP Reza Ahammed, who asked whether any trains are currently operating between Bangladesh and India and whether new services would be introduced.

Indian freight trains carrying goods are being received, and empty rakes are being sent back through the interchange stations at Rohanpur, Darshana and Benapole, he said.
On average, around 43 freight trains are received from India, and 42 empty rakes are sent back each month, the minister said.
"There are currently no passenger trains operating between Bangladesh and India," he said, adding that initiatives are underway to resume passenger services.
He said the possibility of operating a passenger train on the Rajshahi-Kolkata-Rajshahi route is currently under examination.
