5 killed in clash over char land in Noakhali's Hatiya
Several others were injured
At least five people were killed in a clash between two groups over control of a char land in Hatiya upazila of Noakhali today (23 December).
The incident took place around 10am in Jaglar Char village, located on the border of wards 7 and 8 of Sukhchar union.
Confirming the matter, Hatiya Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Saiful Alam said several others were injured in the clash.
The OC said that over the past few days, sporadic clashes had been taking place at Jaglar Char "between the local 'Kopa Shamshu' group and 'Alauddin' group over control of a newly emerged char in the Meghna River". The political affiliations of the groups could not be confirmed.
Clashes between the two sides resumed intermittently from this morning, he said, adding that by the afternoon, police had recovered five bodies, whose identities were yet to be ascertained.
OC Saiful also said police personnel have been deployed at the scene to keep the situation under control.
