5 arrested over attack on Rangpur Hindu homes: Police

Five people have been arrested in connection with the recent attacks on Hindu community homes in Betgari union of Gangachara upazila in Rangpur, police said.
The five were arrested during a joint drive carried out by the police and Army, said a media release issued today (30 July)from the Police Headquarters.
Meanwhile, Sree Rabindranath Roy, a resident of Aldadpur Choyani Para of Gangachara, filed a case against 1,000-1,200 unnamed individuals in connection with the incident, read the release.
The unrest began on the night of 26 July, after Ranjan Kumar Roy, a student of Rangpur Polytechnic Institute, was accused of sharing a Facebook post that reportedly hurt religious sentiments.
He was detained that evening after police confirmed the allegation, according to media reports.
Later that night, an angry crowd vandalised several Hindu homes in the village. Though police managed to bring the situation under control, more houses were attacked the next afternoon.
