According to the OC, more than 200 makeshift huts had been erected under the bridge and along the riverbank, where the detainees had been living.
A total of 345 Rohingyas were detained during a joint operation in Chandanaish upazila of Chattogram early today (5 February), as law enforcement agencies intensified security measures ahead of the 13th parliamentary election.
The operation was carried out by police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and the army between 4am and 6am along the riverbank under Dohazari Bridge, said Md Elias Khan, officer-in-charge (OC) of Chandanaish Police Station.
He added that the operation targeted areas such as the Burma Colony and vicinity beneath the bridge, which law enforcement agencies have identified as crime-prone zones, in a bid to maintain law and order ahead of the upcoming national election.
According to the OC, more than 200 makeshift huts had been erected under the bridge and along the riverbank, where the detainees had been living.
He said over 350 men, women and children were initially detained during the drive. After verification, those who could produce valid national identity cards were released.
"Among those detained were people of different identities as well as members of the Rohingya community. After screening, 345 individuals were identified as Rohingyas," he added.
He said steps are being taken to relocate them to Rohingya camps through representatives of the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC).
