Three people, including two students and a battery-run rickshaw driver, were killed when a speeding bus rammed a rickshaw in Dohazari Sadar area on the Chattogram-Cox's Bazar highway this morning. Another student sustained injuries in the incident.

Enraged locals blocked the highway, demanding better road safety measures following the accident. Protesters claimed that due to the lack of road barriers, such accidents occur frequently, leaving families devastated. Traffic movement remained suspended on the highway for about three hours. As of the latest updates, traffic movement has resumed.

The accident occurred around 8:30am in Chandanaish upazila of Chattogram when a bus of Purabi Paribahan rammed the battery-run-rickshaw from behind.

The deceased were identified as Wakar Uddin Adil, 12, Rizvi Akter, 16, and Ruhul Amin, 45. Adil and Rizvi were siblings. Adil was a seventh-grade student at Pathshala Public School and College, while Rizvi was a ninth-grade student at the same institution. They were the children of Jashim Uddin from Jamir Juri Chairman Bari. Auto-rickshaw driver Ruhul Amin was a resident of the same area and the son of late Amanat Ullah from Chan Gazi Bari.

The injured student, identified as Tushin Akter (16), is the daughter of Abdullah from Chan Gazi Bari. She was rushed to Dohazari Upazila Health Complex for initial treatment before being transferred to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for better care.

Confirming the incident and deaths, Officer-in-Charge of Dohazari Highway police station Subha Ranjan Chakma told The Business Standard, "The students were going for coaching classes on a battery-run rickshaw. A reckless bus hit the rickshaw from behind, killing a student and the driver on the spot. Another student succumbed to injuries on the way to the hospital. Another student who sustained injuries in the accident has been taken to the CMCH."

"Following the incident, police seized the bus, but the driver and helper managed to flee, he added.

He also said that in response to the tragedy, enraged locals blocked the highway causing huge traffic congestion. "By 11:30am the block was lifted and traffic movement resumed", he added.
