3 members of counterfeit currency gang held with Tk34 lakh fake notes
According to the DB chief, the group had long been producing and distributing counterfeit notes in Dhaka, Gazipur, Narayanganj and other parts of the country.
A counterfeit currency racket had been printing fake notes ahead of Eid-ul-Adha and stockpiled counterfeit bills worth Tk34 lakh for circulation in cattle markets, according to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Detective Branch.
The gang had also hired a printing press worker to continuously print fake currency using three machines, DB chief and Additional Commissioner Islam said at a press briefing held at the DMP Media Centre today (14 May).
Based on intelligence information, DB's Uttara division arrested three members of the gang. The arrestees are Md Mujibur Rahman, 38, from Shariatpur; Md Dulal Mridha, 40, from Patuakhali; and Md Mamun, 25, from Netrokona.
They were arrested in separate drives conducted yesterday (13 May) in front of the Shomobay Market (BDR) area under Uttara East Police Station in the capital and in the Bason police station area of Gazipur metropolitan city.
Police also recovered a large amount of counterfeit currency and equipment used to produce fake notes.
Shafiqul Islam said Mujibur Rahman was caught red-handed while selling counterfeit notes in the Samobay Market area. Police recovered fake notes worth Tk4 lakh and Tk40,000 in actual cash, believed to be proceeds from counterfeit note sales, from his possession.
Later, based on information provided by Mujibur, DB conducted another raid in Gazipur's Basan area and arrested Dulal Mridha and Mamun.
During the raid, officers recovered counterfeit notes worth Tk34 lakh. Police also seized a laptop, three colour printers, golden foil paper, security tags, watermark paper, partially printed Tk1,000 notes, liquid gum, cutters and watermark dies used in producing fake currency.
According to the DB chief, the group had long been producing and distributing counterfeit notes in Dhaka, Gazipur, Narayanganj and other parts of the country.
He added that the gang planned to circulate the fake notes in cattle markets and shopping centres ahead of Eid-ul-Adha.
Shafiqul Islam also said the suspects face multiple cases in different districts, including Dhaka.
Responding to a question, he said the gang had been continuously printing counterfeit money using three machines before law enforcers raided the operation. He added that the group had recruited an employee from a printing press for the task.
A case has been filed under the Special Powers Act with Uttara East Police Station over the incident, he added.
