27 endangered birds rescued from Narayanganj

The Forest Department of Bangladesh rescued 27 local birds from an online seller at Rupsibazar in Narayanganj on Thursday.

Wildlife inspectors Abdullah As Sadique and Nargis Sultana conducted a raid, led by Wildlife Crime Control Unit Director Jahir Uddin Akon, at the area in disguise of customers and rescued the birds from a teenage boy.

Sadique told The Business Standard that the seller posted an advertisement on October 6 at Bikroy.com platform, charging Tk2,000 for each bird.

The team rescued 16 plum-headed parakeets, six Spotted doves, four Indian ring-necks and one White-breasted waterhen from the boy's possession.

The rescued birds are in the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List, 2016.

"The boy is an orphan and stays with his maternal grandparents. He promised that he will not commit such crime in future and will help us find bird poachers. He gave an undertaking," Sadique said.

The birds will be released through a programme at Milestone College in Dhaka on October 12, Sadique added.

According to the Wildlife (Conservation and Security) Act 2012, poaching or selling of endangered species is a punishable offence.
