A shipment of 22,000 tonnes of rice from Myanmar has reached Chattogram Port, marking the first consignment under a government-to-government (G2G) agreement between Bangladesh and Myanmar under the interim government.

The rice on the MV Golden Star from Yangon Port arrived at the port's limits at 10:12pm on Thursday and was moored at Jetty No 9 of the GCB on Friday (17 January) morning. Seven Seas Shipping Lines, the shipping agent for the MV Golden Star, confirmed the arrival.

Md Ali Akbar, CEO of Seven Seas Shipping Lines, noted that this is the initial shipment of a total 105,000 tonnes of rice agreed upon by the Directorate General of Food and the Myanmar Rice Federation.

The rice will be delivered in phases via ten small and large vessels, with all consignments scheduled to arrive between mid-January and mid-March.

In addition to the rice from Myanmar, the government has procured 200,000 tonnes of rice from India through an open tender. Two consignments from India have already arrived at Chattogram Port, and the rice has been distributed to various locations across the country.

The Directorate General of Food's transport contractors have handled the distribution, delivering the rice to destinations including Sylhet's Dewanhat, Dhaka's Tejgaon, Narayanganj, and other areas.
