Two people were shot dead and at least 15 others injured during a violent clash between two rival groups over establishing dominance in Raipura upazila of Narsingdi today (26 January).

The clash erupted at around 8am in the Banshgari Bazar area of the upazila's Banshbari Union, with both groups wielding firearms and locally-made weapons, confirmed local sources and police.

The deceased were identified as Ali Ahmad, 24, and Alam Mia, 20. The injured people, several of whom sustained gunshot wounds, were taken to various hospitals for treatment.

Local and police sources said the dispute stemmed from a long-standing rivalry between current Banshgari Union Parishad Chairman Jakir Hossain and former chairman Ashraful Islam.

Confirming the clash over establishing supremacy and casualties, Raipura Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Masud Rana told The Business Standard that they were yet to confirm who Ali and Alam supported.

According to locals, supporters of Ashraful were unable to enter the area for a long time as Jakir's followers dominated it. The clash started in the morning when Ashraful's followers entered the locality.

Tensions had escalated on Saturday night (25 January) when both groups announced their plans for a confrontation using microphones from local mosques, reports UNB.

In the afternoon, Raipura police station Officer-in-Charge Adil Mahmud told UNB that the location was a remote char area far from the station and police were on their way to the scene.
