Two police officials were reportedly mugged in the capital's Mohammadpur area yesterday afternoon (20 February), with one of them sustaining injuries after being attacked with a sharp weapon.
The incident occurred around 3:30pm near the western-side bridge near the Martyred Intellectuals Graveyard in Rayerbazar. The two officials were in plain clothes at the time of the attack, said police.
Confirming the matter, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Assistant Commissioner of Police (Mohammadpur Zone) Md Abdullah Al Mamun said a case has been filed with Mohammadpur Police Station against four unidentified suspects.
"We are investigating the incident and hope to bring those involved under the law very soon," he said.
The victims were identified as Md Samiul Islam, 21, and Md Al Amin Sheikh, 21, both members of Special Security and Protection Battalion-2 (SPBn-2).
According to the case statement, four unidentified assailants intercepted the two officials with locally made sharp weapons and demanded their belongings. When the officials initially refused to comply, the attackers allegedly threatened to kill them.
At one stage, the muggers snatched a mobile phone worth Tk10,000 and Tk500 in cash from Samiul. When Al Amin refused to hand over his phone and money, the assailants reportedly attacked him with a sharp weapon, leaving him injured, before forcibly taking Tk500 from him.
Al Amin was later taken to Rajarbagh Central Police Hospital for treatment, police said.
