2 minors held over idol vandalism in Gazipur
Members of the local Puja Committee discovered several partially completed idols in a vandalised state
Two minors have been detained by Gazipur Metropolitan Police on charges of vandalising under-construction idols at a Durga Puja pandal on the banks of the Turag River in Namabazar of the city.
Both admitted during interrogation that they vandalised the idols out of anger after artisans allegedly behaved rudely when they went to watch the work in progress, Gazipur Metropolitan Police Acting Commissioner Md Jahidul Hasan confirmed today (23 September).
The detainees are Rakib Hasan Patwary, 13, son of the late Harun-or-Rashid of Robidaspara under Kashimpur Police Station, and Md Nazmul Islam, 13, son of Shahjalal from the same area.
According to police, Rakib was detained last night (22 September) and Nazmul early today.
On 17 September, members of the local Puja Committee discovered several partially completed idols in a vandalised state.
Prabir Dutta Bappa, president of Agradami Jubo Sangha Sarbojanin Durga Puja Pandal, said unknown miscreants had damaged the idols between 4pm and 6pm that day.
Following the incident, senior officials from the Gazipur Metropolitan Police, district administration and local administration visited the site.
The district administration and GMP assured organisers of full cooperation and tightened security for the festival.
Acting Commissioner Jahidul Hasan said the incident was being thoroughly investigated and legal action would be taken after further review, as the detainees are minors.
He added that security arrangements had been reinforced to ensure peaceful Sharadiya Durga Puja celebrations.
