The detainees - Anwar Kamal and Emran Hossain - were scheduled to fly to Dubai on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight.
The NSI team detained them on Saturday evening and handed them over to customs officials.
A senior NSI official working at Shah Amanat International Airport told The Business Standard that a passenger named Emran Hossain was detained at the International Gate no 7 on the ground floor of the airport. Currency from Oman, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates worth Tk 12.5 lakh were seized from his possession.
Besides, Nur Kamal was detained from the departure lounge on the second floor of the airport with foreign currency worth Tk 28.4 lakh.
