Members of the army have detained two people and confiscated 220kg shrimps while they were injecting the shrimps with flour, jelly and other hazardous substances in Satkhira's Shyamnagar upazila.

The army members conducted the raid at Khagraghat area under Ishwaripur union of the upazila at 12pm today (24 April), said army sources.

Abdullah Al Rifat, assistant commissioner (Land) of Shyamnagar upazila, said, "A mobile court has fined the detainees Tk1 lakh, and failure to pay the fine will result in three months' imprisonment."

The detainees were identified as Ataur Morol, son of fish trader Kausar Morol from Gomantoli village and Samia Begum, wife of Shawkat Mollah from Khagraghat village in the upazila.

Confirming the matter, Commander of the army's Kaliganj Camp Captain Nahid Hossain said, "We conducted the raid after receiving information that some people were injecting prawns, lobsters and brown shrimps with flour, jelly and some other harmful substances to increase their weight."

"During the raid, we detained two people with various instruments and confiscated 220kg of shrimps of various kinds," said the army official.

Nahid added, "A group of 20-30 individuals have been sending 4,000-5,000kg shrimps containing harmful substances to Dhaka. We will continue our operations against these people."
