2 accused of journalist murder case in Bagerhat arrested from Dhaka

The DB (Detective Branch) police have arrested two persons in connection with the murder of journalist SM Hayat Uddin in Bagerhat, police said yesterday ( 6 October).
The arrested persons are- Md. Omar Faruk alias Emon Howlader (25), son of Shahidul Howlader of Gopalkathi village in Bagerhat Sadar, and Md. Ashiqul Islam, Ashiq (25), son of Md. Abdul Hai of the same area.
DB police arrested them from the room no. 118 on the fourth floor of the New Golden City Residential Hotel in Ashulia Palli Bidyut area under Ashulia police station in Dhaka on Sunday night.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of DB Shariful Islam led the drive to arrest the alleged killers of journalist Hayat Uddin. Later, they were sent to courts where they gave confessional statements, OC of Bagerhat Model Police Station Mahmud-ul-Hasan told BSS.
Besides, Additional Superintendent of Police Mohidul Islam told BSS that the police are hopeful that they will be able to arrest five more people involved in the murder soon.
SM Hayat Uddin, a journalist of the daily Bhorer Chetona, was hacked to death by terrorists at a teastall at the intersection of Harikhali School in the city on 3 August 2025.
Journalists of print and electronic media, including press clubs of nine upazilas of the district, formed a human chain and demanded the immediate arrest of those involved in the murder of journalist Hayat after his killing.
