Fire guts 19 shops in Madaripur market
The blaze, which started around 3am in the Puran Bazar area, also caused partial damage to three tin-shed homes located behind the market

A fire broke out at City Super Market in Madaripur early today (4 April), destroying 19 shops and damaging three residential houses.
The blaze, which started around 3am in the Puran Bazar area, also caused partial damage to three tin-shed homes located behind the market. Victims have claimed losses amounting to at least Tk7 crore.
Six fire service units from Madaripur, Rajair, Kalkini, and Shariatpur responded to the scene and managed to bring the fire under control after nearly three hours of effort.
According to the Madaripur Fire Service and affected shop owners, the fire is believed to have originated from an electrical short circuit in one of the shops. The flames spread rapidly through the market area.
Among the businesses destroyed were 10 cosmetics shops, a computer shop, a confectionery store, a hardware shop, and several storage warehouses.
Firefighter Imranuzzaman from the Madaripur Fire Service said the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but preliminary findings suggest a short circuit.
He added that goods worth approximately Tk1 crore have been salvaged so far, and initial estimates place the losses at Tk30 lakh. However, the total damage is expected to rise following further assessment.
