A case has been filed against 13 individuals, including ten members of the July Shaheed Smrity Foundation, on charges of torturing a couple during interrogation related to the July Uprising.
The complaint was filed by Sabina Yasmin, one of the alleged victims, with the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam's court today (14 October).
Confirming the matter, Md Zakir Hossain, the complainant's lawyer, said after taking the case into cognisance, the court ordered the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to investigate the allegations.
He added that the CID has also been tasked with submitting a report by 11 November.
Officials of the July Shaheed Smrity Foundation who are accused in the case are Iftikhar Hossain, senior verification officer; Sabrina Afroz Srabonti, executive member; Sagar, Mehedi Hasan Prince, Afzalu Rahman Sayem, Saidur Rahman Shahid, Fatema Afrin Payel, Reza Tanvir, Alif and Jahid.
The others accused are Rakin, Shamim Reza Khan, and Sonia Akhter Lubna. Their designations have not been disclosed yet.
According to the case statement, on 19 July 2024, during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, the victim's husband Bulbul Sikder and their son were injured when police and the then ruling party supporters opened fire and attacked protesters at Madani Nagar Madrasah area on Chittagong Road.
Her husband sustained a severe leg injury below the knee, while her son's leg was fractured.
Following the fall of the Awami League government, Sabina and her husband visited the July Shaheed Smrity Foundation office on 20 March this year, seeking official recognition and compensation.
There, Ifthekhar Hossain and other accused interrogated them, later taking her husband to a separate room where he was allegedly tortured for hours, while Sabina was threatened and beaten.
The accused branded them as "fake July Warriors," tried to force them to make false confessions, and seized Sabina's bag and mobile phone, the statement said.
The complainant said that her husband suffered mental trauma and remained under treatment for a long time. After his partial recovery, Sabina filed the case with the court.
