Bangladesh currently has 12.37 crore voters, an increase of 1.54% compared to last year, according to the Election Commission's (EC) updated list of voters.
The EC released the list today (2 March), marking the National Voter Day 2025.
It shows that the number of voters has increased by 18.82 lakh this year.
As of 2 March 2024, Bangladesh's voters were 12.18 crore.
While unveiling the voter list of 123,732,274 people at a rally at the EC headquarters in Dhaka, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin said that the EC has promised the nation a free, fair, and credible election.
"We believe this country's people support the Election Commission. We have pledged to the nation to ensure a free, fair, and credible election. In January, we initiated a door-to-door voter list update, and data entry is currently in progress," he said.
Following his speech, the CEC officially inaugurated this year's National Voter Day at the vibrant rally in front of Nirbachan Bhaban at Agargaon this morning.
Election Commissioner Brigadier General (retd) Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah said another updated version of the voter list will be published by 30 June.
What is National Voter Day?
National Voter Day is an annual observance aimed at raising awareness about the importance of voting and encouraging citizen participation in the electoral process.
Since 2018, the country has observed Voter Day on March 2. The Election Commission has led the effort to organise events to educate people about their voting rights and responsibilities.
As per tradition, the final updated voter list is published on 2 March every year, coinciding with the observance of National Voter Day. However, this year's voter list updating process, which began on 20 January, is still ongoing.
The day signifies free and fair elections in a democratic society and promotes voter education, particularly among young and first-time voters. Various activities such as seminars, awareness campaigns, and registration drives are conducted nationwide to ensure that all eligible citizens are included in the electoral roll.
The day's primary goal is to strengthen democracy by encouraging greater voter turnout and ensuring that elections are conducted fairly and transparently.
