"The mangoes were confiscated from two buses in the Bankal area of the town around 6:30pm," Upazila Agricultural Officer Md Monir Hossain told The Business Standard.

"The mangoes were being transported from Kaliganj and Debhata upazilas to Bogura and Rangpur. The mangoes were not yet in season," he added.

Satkhira District Executive Magistrate SM Akash said the detained individuals admitted to artificially ripening the mangoes using chemical sprays. "A total of 1,125kg of Gobindobhog mangoes, packed in 45 crates, were seized, and preparations are underway to destroy them."

"The detained individuals were fined Tk20,000 each and sentenced to one month in jail in case of non-payment."

Authorities have previously issued a mango harvesting calendar, but dishonest traders continue their activities in defiance.

The district administration has ramped up monitoring efforts to prevent such practices.
