One person was killed and several others injured in a collision between a train and a truck at Khulna on Monday night, leading to the suspension of rail communication between Khulna and the rest of the country.
An elderly man was killed and several others injured in a collision between a train and a truck at the Afil Gate rail crossing in under Khulna's Khan Jahan Ali Police Station last night (14 July).
The deceased could not be identified at the time of filing this report.
All rail communication from Khulna remained suspended as authorities work to clear the tracks and restore services.
The incident occurred at around 7:45pm when the Chapainawabganj-bound Mahananda Express collided with a truck stuck on the tracks.
Police said the truck's engine had stalled on the crossing, leading to the fatal crash.
Khan Jahan Ali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kabir Hossain confirmed that the impact caused three coaches of the train to derail.
"Several passengers were injured," he said. One elderly man, critically injured in the accident, was pronounced dead after being taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital.
Khulna Railway Police OC Ferdous Alam Khan said the train was en route to Khulna when the truck entered the track. The crossing's gatekeeper Wahidul fled the scene following the incident.
Khulna Station Master Zakir Hossain stated that a rescue train has been dispatched to the site.
Also, the Sundarban Express, which was scheduled to depart for Dhaka at 9:45pm, would begin its journey with some delay due to the disruption, reports UNB.
