'Yes' campaign wins referendum with 68% of the vote
The EC secretary said the official gazette notification will be published shortly.
About 68% people who voted in yesterday's (12 February) referendum voted for "yes."
Of all the people who voted in the referendum, 4,80,74,429 people voted for "yes," while 2,25,65,627 people voted "no," Election Commission Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said today.
Voter turnout in the parliamentary election was 59.44% while participation in the referendum was 60.26%, said Akhtar while announcing the unofficial results of the 13th general election and the nationwide referendum at a press briefing at the Bangladesh Election Commission office.
He said results from 297 out of 299 constituencies have been declared unofficially.
The EC senior secretary explained that the overall election turnout percentage is slightly lower because voting in two constituencies remains stayed by court order. However, since the referendum was not under any legal restriction, those votes were counted, resulting in a slightly higher participation rate in the referendum.
Based on the results declared so far:
- BNP: 209 seats
- Jamaat-e-Islami: 68 seats
- NCP: 6 seats
- Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish: 2 seats
- Islami Andolon Bangladesh: 1 seat
- Gono Odhikar Parishad: 1 seat
- BJP: 1 seat
- Gono Songhoti Andolon: 1 seat
- Khelafat Majlish: 1 seat
- Independent candidates: 7 seats
Gazette to be published soon
