Writ challenges Nahid's Dhaka-11 nomination over alleged Dominica citizenship; NCP rejects claim
Mahabub Alam, joint chief coordinator and head of the NCP’s Election Media Sub-Committee, said Nahid Islam has travelled to only two countries—Malaysia and China—and has never visited any other country.
A writ petition has been filed with the High Court seeking cancellation of the candidature of National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam, the 11-party alliance-nominated candidate for the Dhaka-11 constituency, alleging that he obtained dual citizenship of Dominica in April last year.
The writ was filed by Jatiyo Party candidate Shamim Ahmed, his lawyer Mohammad Majnu Mollah told journalists today (9 February).
In the petition, the chief election commissioner, election secretary, returning officer and Nahid Islam have been made respondents.
The application states that Nahid Islam obtained citizenship of Dominica on 20 April 2025.
Lawyer Mohammad Majnu Mollah said the writ would be placed for hearing tomorrow (10 February) before a High Court bench comprising Justice Fahmida Kader and Justice Md Asif Hasan.
Reacting to the allegation, the NCP said, "Nahid Islam has travelled to only two countries in his entire life, Malaysia and China. Other than these, he has never visited any other country at any time. The allegation of dual citizenship brought against him is false and absurd.
"Accusing him of obtaining citizenship of a country he has never even visited is nothing but a lie. We believe the BNP candidate has prompted the Jatiyo Party to raise such an allegation in an attempt to cover up his own dual citizenship issue," said a statement by Mahabub Alam, NCP's joint chief coordinator and head of the Election Media Sub-Committee.
The Dhaka-11 constituency comprises wards 21, 22, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41 and 42 of Dhaka North City Corporation in the Gulshan area, along with ward 23 of Sabujbagh.
The constituency has a total of 439,078 voters, including 222,877 male voters, 216,198 female voters and three voters from the third gender.
Candidates contesting the seat include BNP's MA Kaiyum, NCP's Md Nahid Islam, independent candidate Kohinoor Akter Bithi, Bangladesh Cultural Liberation Alliance's Kazi Md Shahidullah, Gano Forum's Md Abdul Kader, Gono Odhikar Parishad's Md Arifur Rahman, Bangladesh Republican Party's Md Zakir Hossain, National Peoples Party's Md Mizanur Rahman, Jatiyo Party's Shamim Ahmed and Islami Andolan Bangladesh's Sheikh Md Fazle Bari Masud.
Mahabub Alam, joint chief coordinator and head of the NCP's Election Media Sub-Committee, said Nahid Islam has travelled to only two countries—Malaysia and China—and has never visited any other country.
He described the allegation of dual citizenship against Nahid Islam as false and absurd, saying that accusing him of obtaining citizenship of a country he has never even visited is nothing but a lie.
Mahabub Alam further claimed that the BNP candidate had prompted the Jatiyo Party to raise the allegation in an attempt to cover up his own dual citizenship issue.
