Rumeen Farhana files complaint with EC alleging bias by Sarail UNO
She claimed that when she brought these issues to the attention of the UNO and sought information on remedial measures, he behaved in a discourteous and uncooperative manner.
Independent candidate Barrister Rumeen Farhana has filed a written complaint with the Election Commission, alleging partisan conduct by the upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) and assistant returning officer of Sarail upazila in Brahmanbaria.
She submitted the complaint against Md Abubakar Sarkar to the chief election commissioner yesterday (5 February).
Rumeen is contesting the election from Brahmanbaria-2, comprising Sarail, Ashuganj and parts of Bijoynagar. Her electoral symbol is the "duck." Following her decision to run independently, the BNP expelled her from the party.
In her written complaint, Rumeen alleged that serious irregularities are taking place in her constituency in connection with the election and the referendum.
She claimed that when she brought these issues to the attention of the UNO and sought information on remedial measures, he behaved in a discourteous and uncooperative manner.
She further alleged that on several previous occasions, she had drawn the UNO's attention to various irregularities and violations of the electoral code of conduct by the BNP alliance-nominated candidate, but no action was taken.
Expressing concern that a free and fair election may not be possible in Sarail upazila due to this, Rumeen said a complaint has also been lodged against him with the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). She urged the EC to consider the matter seriously.
Denying the allegations, UNO Abubakar termed the accusations baseless. He said that if any candidate submits a written complaint, it is investigated and appropriate action is taken accordingly.
He added that the upazila administration is fully committed to ensuring a free, fair and neutral election.
He also claimed that Rumeen did not submit any written complaint to his office.
