Post-poll violence in Bagerhat claims life of BNP rebel candidate's supporter

A supporter of an independent candidate died today (14 February) from injuries sustained during a clash with BNP activists in Kachua upazila of the Bagerhat-2 constituency.
The deceased, identified as Osman Sardar, 29, son of Shahjahan Sardar from Paranowapara village in Bagerhat Sadar.
He passed away at around 11:30am while undergoing treatment at Khulna Medical College Hospital.
Osman was a supporter of the "Horse" symbol candidate, MAH Selim.
Bagerhat Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Masum Khan confirmed the death, stating that a police team has been dispatched to the area to identify those involved and determine the exact cause of the clash.
According to family members and locals, the violence erupted yesterday evening (13 February) in Chitabari village of Dhopakhali Union, Kachua.
Osman's elder brother, Enamul Kabir Sardar, alleged that BNP-nominated candidate's supporters were patrolling the area and looking for "Horse" symbol candidate's supporters.
"At one point, they engaged in an argument with my brother and struck him on the head with a sharp weapon," Enamul claimed. Osman was first rushed to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital before being transferred to Khulna as his condition deteriorated.
At least 10 people from both sides, including Osman Sardar, were injured in the incident.
In Bagerhat-2 (Sadar–Kachua) constituency, BNP nominated candidate Sheikh Mohammad Zakir Hossain contested the seat. Former BNP district president and former MP of Bagerhat-2, MAH Selim, ran as a rebel candidate from the same party.
Defeating both of them by a large margin, Jamaat-e-Islami's candidate Sheikh Manjurul Haque Rahad won the seat.
