JaPa Rangpur stronghold falls as party fails to win a single seat in national polls
JaPa Chairman GM Quader came third in Rangpur-3 with 43,385 votes this time, after having won the seat in 2024 and serving as leader of the opposition.
The Jatiyo Party (JaPa) contested yesterday's (12 February) general election from 196 seats but failed to win a single constituency, marking the party's worst defeat in its four-decade history.
Rangpur, long considered a stronghold of the party, saw a complete reversal of fortunes.
JaPa Chairman GM Quader came third in Rangpur-3 with 43,385 votes this time, after having won the seat in 2024 and serving as leader of the opposition.
This polling day, he stayed home at his New Senpara residence and did not even visit polling centres.
JaPa General Secretary Shameem Haider Patwary also finished third in Gaibandha-1, receiving 33,976 votes.
Of the six Rangpur constituencies, the Jamaat-e-Islami won five seats. The remaining seat went to their ally, the National Citizen Party (NCP).
BNP candidates came second in every Rangpur constituency in this election.
In Rangpur-1, Jamaat's Raihan Siraji won with 174,245 votes, while the BNP's Mokarram Hossain Sujon received 69,131.
Rangpur-2 went to ATM Azaharul Islam with 135,556 votes; the BNP's Mohammad Ali Sarkar had 80,538.
Rangpur-3 was won by Mahbubar Rahman Belal with 175,827 votes, defeating the BNP's Shamsuzzaman Samu, who received 84,578.
Rangpur-4 went to the NCP's Akhter Hossen with 149,966 votes, beating the BNP's Emdadul Haque Bhorsa at 140,564 votes.
Rangpur-5 saw Jamaat's Golam Rabbani win with 176,411 votes; the BNP's Golam Rabbani received 115,116.
In Rangpur-6, Nurul Amin won with 120,128 votes over the BNP's Saiful Islam, who received 117,703.
Rangpur, the home of party founder and former president Hussein Muhammad Ershad, had long been considered a JaPa stronghold, but this election has significantly changed the political landscape in the region.
