Dhaka-16: Jamaat's Baten leads BNP's Aminul by 2,666 votes after counting all centres
According to the unofficial tally, Abdul Baten received 86,823 votes, while Aminul secured 84,207 votes.
Jamaat-backed candidate Colonel (retd) Abdul Baten has secured a lead of 2,666 votes over BNP candidate Aminul Haque in Dhaka-16 after counting results from all 137 centres, according to an informal announcement by the assistant returning officer.
According to the unofficial tally, Abdul Baten received 86,823 votes, while Aminul secured 84,207 votes.
The assistant returning officer said the result is not final, as postal ballots are yet to be added. The official final result will be declared by the returning officer.
When asked about allegations by the BNP candidate seeking suspension of results in at least two centres, officials said they were not aware of any such complaint.
A total of 178,061 votes were cast in the constituency out of 400,499 registered voters.
Meanwhile, tension has gripped the constituency over the announcement of the results. BNP candidate Aminul Haque demanded suspension of results from multiple centres, alleging irregularities.
Around 11pm today (12 February), Aminul Haque arrived at Mirpur Bangla School and College polling centre and formally raised his demand with the officials on duty.
Meanwhile, at least thousands of supporters of Aminul gathered near the centre. On the opposite side, Jamaat activists also took position.
Members of the army were deployed in between the two groups, surrounding the results announcement venue to maintain order.
