Jamaat ameer questions 'delay' in announcing results in several constituencies
“The number of seats won appeared on the website, then disappeared, and then was no longer there. Our representatives were made to wait for a long time," he alleges.
Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has questioned the delay in announcing results in several constituencies in the 13th national parliamentary election.
Speaking at a press conference at the party's central office in Moghbazar last night (12 February), he said, "In several constituencies, as far as we know, we are leading and counting has been completed. But the local returning officers are not announcing the results and are keeping them pending. We do not understand why."
The Jamaat chief also alleged inconsistencies in the publication of results on the Election Commission's website. "The number of seats won appeared on the website, then disappeared, and then was no longer there. Our representatives were made to wait for a long time. Just a short while ago, non-government results from 10 to 12 centres were announced," he added.
Referring to what he described as a "cat-and-mouse game" in some constituencies, Shafiqur questioned why the result of Dhaka-8 was still pending. "Why is Dhaka-8 still hanging? What is happening there? You journalists know. Such issues do not reflect healthy political practice."
He urged the Election Commission to quickly publish the full results. "The commission has assured that it will announce the complete results by 13 February. We are waiting to see whether they do so. If they do, that is good. If not, we will wait within reasonable limits," he said.
Shafiqur said the party would review the overall situation before announcing its final position. However, he stressed that Jamaat would maintain a positive political approach. "If politics is for the people of the country, this must be accepted. There is no politics with a guarantee of passing."
He also expressed satisfaction over the victory of the 'Yes' vote in the referendum as per the non-government results.
