Court advises expelled BNP leader Manjurul Ahsan Munshi to exercise restraint in public remarks
Munshi had initially been nominated by the BNP for the Cumilla-4 seat; however, his candidacy was cancelled by court order after he was found to be a loan defaulter
The Electoral Inquiry and Adjudication Committee in Cumilla-4 (Debidwar) has advised expelled BNP leader Manjurul Ahsan Munshi to exercise restraint in his public remarks after summoning him over allegations of threatening voters.
Senior Judicial Magistrate Tafreema Tabassum of the Cumilla Sadar Civil Court, who heads the committee, issued the directive today (11 February) during a hearing related to the 13th parliamentary election.
Addressing Munshi, the judge said, "You are a senior person. We are receiving many complaints against you over the phone. Please speak in a restrained manner."
The complaint was filed in writing by Debidwar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and Assistant Returning Officer Rakibul Islam.
Munshi submitted a written statement to the committee and offered an explanation regarding his recent remarks at an election rally.
He appeared before the committee after being asked to provide a written explanation in person by 2:30pm today over allegations that he had threatened voters during a speech last night.
In a video statement that went viral earlier, Munshi was heard saying, "If BNP comes to power and you vote for another party, I will not spare any of you. If necessary, I will burn your houses down."
Following the incident, the BNP last night announced his expulsion from the party through a press release.
Munshi had initially been nominated by the BNP for the Cumilla-4 seat. However, his candidacy was cancelled by court order after he was found to be a loan defaulter.
