Yunus thanks Jamaat chief for 'dignified' acceptance of election results
He also extended special thanks for the constructive support and counsel the Jamaat-e-Islami provided to the interim government during its tenure following the July Uprising.
Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus today (14 February) congratulated Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman for his party's "prestigious" performance in the 13th parliamentary election and expressed deep gratitude for his "dignified acceptance" of the results.
In a message directed to the Jamaat chief, Yunus lauded the party's active participation and the restraint shown by its leadership and activists during the transition period.
"I sincerely thank you for the active and widespread participation of your party's candidates, their firm competition in the 13th national election, and subsequently, for your peaceful and dignified acceptance of the election results," the chief adviser said in his message.
The Nobel laureate emphasised that Shafiqur's political etiquette, moderation, and calls for peaceful conduct among his followers played a vital role in maintaining national stability from the campaign phase through to the post-results period.
He also extended special thanks for the constructive support and counsel the Jamaat-e-Islami provided to the interim government during its tenure following the July Uprising.
"Bangladesh is passing through a crucial juncture. We face many challenges and opportunities in the global economy, technological transformation, climate change, human resource development, and social justice.
"In this context, to make our democracy stronger, more participatory, and institutionally consolidated, the responsible and principled roles of both the government and the opposition are indispensable," said the chief adviser.
Expressing high expectations for the party's future role, Yunus said he hopes Jamaat will act as a "constructive and responsible opposition force" within parliament and the broader political arena.
"Our aspiration is for a healthy and positive political culture to flourish through principled debates, legislative counsel, articulating public expectations, and ensuring state accountability," the message added.
Yunus concluded by reaffirming his belief that Shafiqur would continue to uphold national unity as he did before, which he termed the strength of the nation.
