Election violence: BNP-Jamaat clash leaves 11 injured in Kushtia
The injured were undergoing treatment at the Daulatpur Upazila Health Complex, police said.
At least 11 people were injured in a clash between supporters of the BNP and the Jamaat-e-Islami during an election campaign in Kushtia's Daulatpur upazila this morning (5 February).
Among the injured, Jamaat activists include Shariful Islam, Amirul Islam, Hasan, Shafiul Islam, Sakil, Ibrahim, Biplob, and Iman.
On the other hand, injured BNP men were Litton, Tabibur Rahman, and Biplob Hossain.
The injured were undergoing treatment at the Daulatpur Upazila Health Complex, police said.
According to locals, the clash erupted when Jamaat-nominated candidate Belal Uddin, accompanied by leaders and activists, arrived at local Pipulbaria Bazar around 11:30 am to conduct an election campaign.
At that time, a group of 10 to 15 men, led by local BNP leader Md Hamid Molla, allegedly attacked the Jamaat procession, forcing Jamaat men to retaliate, triggering a clash and leaving ten more people injured.
Following the clash, tensions spread across the area, prompting the deployment of additional police forces to maintain law and order.
Rejecting the allegation of the attack, Daulatpur BNP General Secretary Bellal Hossain claimed that Jamaat activists carried out a sudden attack on BNP workers during the campaign, leaving several of their supporters injured.
However, the upazila unit Jamaat General Secretary Bulbul claimed that a planned attack was made on them while electioneering.
Demanding a proper investigation, he said similar incidents had occurred earlier.
Contacted, Officer-in-Charge of Daulatpur Police Station Arifur Rahman said legal action would be taken after investigations if complaints are lodged.
